State of Play: Opportunities and Barriers for Children's Participation in Sports in Australia

31 March 2025

Australia prides itself on a rich sports culture, with many children engaging in various physical activities from a young age. According to the most recent data from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), a significant majority of Australian children between the ages of 5 and 14 are actively involved in some form of organised sporting activity outside of school hours. However, there remain notable disparities and barriers that must be addressed to ensure equitable access to sports for all children.

Participation Levels

The 2022 AusPlay survey provides a comprehensive snapshot of children's participation in physical activities across the nation. It finds that approximately 69% of children aged 5-14 participate in organised physical activities outside school hours. Sports like swimming, soccer, and AFL are among the most popular choices among Australian kids.

The benefits of such participation are widely recognised, with sports being instrumental in promoting not only physical health but also teamwork, self-discipline, and social skills.

Barriers to Participation

Despite the high overall participation rates, we know we are facing a cost of living crisis that hinders equitable access to sports for all children

The cost of sporting equipment, uniforms, club fees, and travel can be prohibitive for many families. A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows a clear linkage between family income and participation rates in sporting activities. Families facing additional challenges such as family violence, and mental health often have more immediate concerns to address.

Addressing the Barriers

To combat these challenges, the Carnelian Foundation partners with local schools and activity providers to make these activities more inclusive and accessible. This ensure that every child can participate in the same activities as their peers and reap the same benefits.

Conclusion

While children's participation in sports in Australia is robust, addressing the existing barriers is critical to nurturing an environment where all children can enjoy the physical, social, and mental health benefits of sport. By prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, Australia can ensure that every child has the chance to participate and excel in sports, irrespective of their background or circumstances.
